Looking for a fun way to capture memories of your guests at your next special event? Photo Booth Rentals are continuing to grow in popularity and it's no surprise really...they're so much fun!

At a wedding I attended this summer, the photo booth was set up in a back corner of the room, so as not to distract from the other decor and elegance of the event. It also had a treasure chest of props for guests to wear as well when getting their pictures taken - now who can resist wigs, glasses, beaks and hats? Both young and old were having a blast in there all night (...the open bar helped people loosen up a little too I'm sure!) The best part was that the machine printed out two sets of each photo grouping so you could leave one copy with the bride and groom for their scrapbook and keep one copy for yourself.

Who doesn't love to look at pictures of themselves, honestly?! I have kept these pictures on my fridge and they still make me laugh daily!

Not your average CHEESEcake!

I'm starting to see these talked about more and more and thought I better share the idea with those of you planning any special event this year: It's a Cheesecake!

Literally, a cake made with layers of cheese wheels!!! No, this does not have to replace a wedding cake or baby shower cake, but can complement any food table set out for guests as a cheesy twist on a cheese platter. Think about how your guests would appreciate some brie and grapes while dancing at midnight or playing games at a Stag & Doe. You can make it funky with coloured cheese such as blue, or printed rind cheese. Add ribbon, fruit or flowers to really dress it up and follow whatever theme you have planned.

Being a cheese-lover, this idea is a must on my list of haves at my next gathering...I just wish I could have a layered cheesecake in the fridge waiting for me at all times!

This bouquet above is my absolute favourite...I just want to eat it up! The combination of textures and soft and dark colours is stunning. So I just had to check out the creative stylist and stumbled upon JL Designs. Now operating out of Orange County, California, this floral and event designer (Carissa Jones) has quite the clientele list. Inspiring Canadian Venues to Consider...or Copy!

Sorry for the delay in posting to this site my faithful friends...with three weeks to go before the arrival of my first little bundle of joy, I have become someone I hardly recognize anymore, someone who lets things slide (...dishes, laundry, blog posts...LOL!) I didn't even get around to my Christmas shopping or decorating until the 24th!

I am coming back strong; however, with some inspiring and Canadian venues that you can consider for your up-coming nuptials. If you can't get to the locations, take note of the decor and themes that you can likely recreate no matter where you may be. I am posting pics of my three favourites; one being only 35 minutes from Ottawa.

The first really drew me in with the flowing fabric ceiling and natural, understated centrepieces. I love outdoor tents, but the draping of the fabric truly creates a more romantic and intimate feeling in this one. If you're in British Colombia, check out the Hart House Restaurant in Barnaby for the "ultimate in West Coast elegance!"

Just East of Ottawa, you will find the Beantown Ranch - a gorgeous and rustic local for nature-lovers out there. Check out their wedding slideshow here.

Finally, what could be more fun for you and your guests than hosting your event in a brewery?!!! The Steamwhistle Brewery is smack-dab in the middle of downtown Toronto and offers that urban, modern vibe that can easily be transformed to fit your theme and colours. Lots of windows, dark wood and beer...just add flowers, lights and a little colour and you're good to go! I am so looking forward to attending a wedding here in the Spring...I'll keep you posted!

I saw this super cute gift at a little kitchen store in the Eaton Centre in Toronto and thought I better snap a pic and share it - what a great shower gift it would make (along with something from her registry of course!)

I mean, really, what would make your cookies taste better than having their ingredients measured in diamonds!!!

I found this one when shopping in Scottsdale, AZ this summer and had to pick it up (just in case!) My favourite U.S. kitchen store, Sur la Table, also carries diamond-shaped cookie cutters...you could go theme crazy with this one ladies!

Just a friendly reminder to those planning their nuptials anytime soon (or in the near future). Head down to the Ottawa Convention Centre for their annual Fall Wedding Palace Bridal Show. It's this Saturday and Sunday (September 10th and 11th). There are tonnes of exhibitors, fashion shows and prizes too. Even if you're not interested in talking to anyone, go just to get ideas: the displays are usually striking!!!

Why not make a day of it and have a nice lunch or dinner downtown afterwards, just because! I give you permission ;)

Snap, crackle and pop!

Just got back from a fun trip to Florida with a girlfriend and had to share this pic with you. I love rice krispie squares so much...that when I saw this cake, I thought "genius!"...and "Why haven't I thought of this before?" I have seen rice krispies used on Cake Boss on TLC has a great agent for building huge intricate-looking cakes, but as the cake itself, what a yummy idea!

Although it may not be elegant enough for a wedding, I think it would be cute for Birthdays and Showers, and of course Bachelorette Parties too (I'll let you think creatively about what shapes you could mold!!!) lol

The krispies shaped on popsicle sticks would make super cute favours for these events as well - just add some coloured icing sugar to highlight the shape you've chosen and wrap them in cellophane with a pretty ribbon.

My girlfriend had to hold me back from purchasing the whole Minnie cake, but I'm inspired to create my own at my next event - hope you are too!

Another suggestion for Party Planners...

So I attended a beautiful wedding recently where it was quite obvious that great care had been taken to ensure that a consistent theme was present - it was truly a black and white affair from the dresses to the table linens and favours. It was a small wedding (nine tables in total for dinner), however 4 out of the 6 people at my table had their names misspelled (mine included)! When I say misspelled, I'm not talking easy-to-make mistakes, but really obvious ones (Who spells Robert with two "b's?"!!!) Should I mention that it was more embarrassing since the bride was family?!!!

It is so important to have your final guest list revised by at least two other people in order to make sure you've done your best to avoid this little faux-pas. I realize and value the importance of delegating tasks, but whomever you choose to write or print your place cards should have access to a final, mistake-free list. It takes no time at all to forward a copy to the mother of the bride and mother of the groom to ask them to check spellings for their sides of the party.

Little things like this go a long way to pulling off one beautifully elegant, and thoughtful event!

A true etiquette FAIL!

Please tell me that this is not becoming a trend out there for Baby Showers and Bridal Showers a-like? If this has happened to you, let me apologize on the behalf of tacky organizers - and if you have been the organizer and arranged for this to be done...shame on you and promise me you won't let it happen again!!!

Chatting with some girlfriends last week, I learned of a new "shower game" going around that almost made my drink shoot out my nose! Then, this game was further discussed in a Dear Abby article in Saturday's Ottawa Citizen.

So...what is it, you're asking...get to the point Renee!!! Well, did you know that invited guests everywhere are being handed blank envelopes at showers and being asked to write their own addresses on them in an attempt to help the guest of honour (mom-to-be or bride-to-be) fill out her Thank You cards more quickly after the event?! GASP! I KNOW! I mean, if you're going this far, why not also ask them to provide stamps from their purses OR hand them a blank Thank You card in which they can write what gifts they gave and how they should be used. All the guest of honour would have to do is write "Thank You" and her name. At least then you should be almost guaranteed to receive the card within a year of the event?!

I'm sorry for the harsh rant, but what ever happened to true gratitude? Taking the time to address an envelope and write a personal message tells the guest (presumably your friend or family) just how much they mean to you and what the gift means too. They have taken the time and hard-earned money to go out and search for this gift for you, I think that deserves a little more than a "Thank you for the gift" inside their own self-addressed envelope don't you?

There's my rant for a Monday morning! Sorry ladies...had to get that one out!!!

PS. If you are missing some guests home addresses, have a cute "Guest Book" by the door and ask them to update their addresses in there while also leaving the guest of honour some sweet messages. This will be a cherished keepsake that won't offend a soul!

So this past weekend, I was in Toronto to celebrate the Baby Shower of one of my best friends and was thrilled to learn that she had booked us appointments to get our hair done. I love nothing more than knowing that I will have fabulous hair and not have to do it myself!!!

I was more thrilled when I discovered that we were hitting up one of the new trends in salons - a blow dry bar! Blo is a franchised salon whose tag line reads: "no cut, no colour, just wash, blow, go." For $30, you get a terrific wash (I say terrific because my lovely stylist went to town massaging my scalp....I think my leg starting shaking at one point?!) and then you choose from one of their signature styles to finish the look that you want to achieve for the day. Your options are Red Carpet, Executive Sweet (super straight), Hunt Club (the perfect ponytail), High Society, Holly Would, Hugs Sex and Rock and Roll, and the Boho Braid (a la Lauren Conrad)!

So what style did I choose...the Holly Would of course! Anything to get a little bounce and big curls in my pin straight locks.

I would absolutely recommend this salon - what a fun idea before a girl's night out, Bridal Shower, Baby Shower, Engagement Party or just because. What an affordable way to feel fantastic for a couple of days.

Wills & Kate - It's Official!

It is with a little sadness, but lots of joy that I announce that they are officially married - Wills & Kate are now the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge!

So I have only seen the carriage ride to Buckingham Palace...but I'm so looking forward to watching the whole ceremony after work today (with a glass or two of bubbly of course!) It was such a sweet ride, however, with the newlyweds looking so young and shy. I loved how Kate gently bowed her head everytime Wills saluted. I also loved watching Harry in the "kids" carriage!!! It looked like he was alone, and then you would see little heads bobbing around!

I was watching CBC and they had viewers posting notes on the bottom of the screen, wishing the couple well...but my favourite was a viewer in Kitchener who wrote in: "Hey Wills - send your best man my way!"

Anyways, I really loved the simplicity of Kate's dress. Designed by Sarah Burton (of House of McQueen) she looked stunning but not overdone. The train was long enough to fit royalty, but not obnoxious either! Kate's "something borrowed" today were her diamond earrings, passed to her by her parents. Her sister, Pippa, looked amazing too in her form fitting white gown...I need to look that one up too!

So I am a little sad that I can no longer obsess about this...I wonder how long until knock-offs of everything Kate's wearing will be available???

Check it out ladies - The producers of "Knocked Up" have created another sure-to-be classic movie called "Bridesmaids" and it is coming to theatres next month. Personally, I just love that Kristen Wiig; she plays the role of the Maid of Honour (or dishonour) in this film, while Melissa McCarthy plays another bridesmaid...but a rather manly-looking one (She was so much cuter as Sookie on Gilmore Girls, wasn't she?!!!)

Anyways, grab your favourite girls and head to the theatres to check this one out next month. I can't wait to see how the parties, ceremony and reception are designed and decorated - I love the lack of budget in movie weddings...they're always so over-the-top and drool-worthy too!!! I guess we'll have to wait and see!

Yes, I've got the fever!

How can you not talk about, think about and dream about the Royal Wedding when you're in the wedding business? Please forgive me for going overboard, but you all know I've been rooting for Kate for years! Just wanted to remind you to tune into CBC Newsworld Friday night at 8pm or Saturday night at 7pm (make it a family Easter event!) to catch the "William and Kate: Wedding of the Century" special. I happened to stumble upon it when stuck in my hotel room at the Toronto Airport and was sooooooo excited! It's really well done and hilarious too: you will love the part when they discuss her "possible" hairstyle and end up super-imposing Kate's face on different Hollywood celebs hair...classic!!!

I was hoping they might go so far as to mix William and Kate's faces to show what their future children would look like, but I was disappointed in that area!!!

NEWS: The always funky and fabulous store "Anthropology" has launched a line for those ladies heading to the alter! Whether you're the bride or her official posse, there's something unique for everyone in this collection.

For brides, my personal favourite is the "Tiered Tulip" gown - which features a striking black bow and asymmetrical details at the hem. It just looks so fun and flirty. A close second is the "Burnished Organza" gown because the skirt reminds me of the style worn by Luisana Lopilato when she married (sniff sniff) my Michael Buble! One month away...

...but who's really counting anyway? Ok, admit it, you have also put the Royal Wedding in your iPhone/Blackberry Calendar! We are officially one month away from the biggest wedding event of our lives: Prince William to Kate Middleton. I believe his mother was married the summer before I was even born, so this truly is a big one for me!

I wanted to share the newest tradition of the Royals, that will be released on April 21st, I believe, by Royal mail. This Commemorative Stamp features two gorgeous designs from the couple's engagement session with photographer Mario Testino.(Check out his site too - he's amazing!) That prince is one lucky man...she's just stunning! And that ring...

As I've mentioned recently, I have been creating Custom Favour Tags to accompany the delectable chocolate truffles of Sue (Crazy 4 Chocolate.ca) for her bride and groom-to-bes and am so thrilled to share this gorgeous picture she took of the final product. Not only am I super jealous of the amazing quality of her picture, but I just love the way the ribbon matches the border of the tags and how perfectly tied the bows are. They look good enough to eat...and hopefully they all were! The happy couple were married in Ottawa last weekend.

What a beautiful and thoughtful idea! I was approached by a male client looking to surprise his wife with personal stationery as her 1st Wedding Anniversary gift. The traditional first anniversary gift is paper afterall. What a fantastic idea...be sure to forward this link to your husbands, brothers and friends who may just need that extra hint, I always here to help!!! LOL!

I created some letter pages as well as some postcard size notecards, all with matching envelopes. The client chose the fonts and design that he thought she would like best and we went from there! I'm really pleased with how they turned out and am thinking what a great gift this would make for any occasion (Mother's Day, Birthdays, host gifts...). I love seeing how romantic men can be today! Bravo!

Tags and tags galore!

I am thrilled to be working with Sue Casey of Crazy4Chocolate when her clients request personalized favour tags to be added to their truffle boxes.

Sue attaches the tags to the boxes with dimensional two-sided tape so they "pop" from the box a little. Her boxes come in many colours and she wraps them in ribbon to match your event's theme or your desire. The tags above with the coloured border match the ribbon colour, creating conistency in design. The layered tags "MD" are printed on shimmery paper, layered on black linen paper and will be attached to gold boxes. What a rich look that will be! I'll be sure to have her send me pics of the final product.

In honour of Valentine's Day, I thought I would share some romantic words chosen straight out of the finest in English literature! Romantic quotations are a nice touch to feature on some stationery, such as your Wedding Program, Save the Date cards, Favours and albums too!

Here are my favourite quotations, taken from a list that was featured in Saturday's Ottawa Citizen:

"Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same." (Emily Bronte)
"Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be." (Robert Browning)
"For you see, each day I love you more. Today more than yesterday and less than tomorrow." (Rosemonde Gerard)

This final one I love on a personal level, as it is engraved in both mine and my husband's rings in French (poor Rob can't pronounce it...so romantic right?!!!) It reads: Plus que hier, moins que demain.

A Posh Night in February

Mark your calendars - yet another smaller, intimate Wedding Show is coming up and I love the location! The Posh Wedding Show will take place on Saturday, February 19th from 4pm -10pm in the evening...so grab your girls and make a night out of it!

It is happening at The Summit (formerly the Merlot Rooftop Grill), a restaurant located at the top of the Ottawa Marriott Hotel on the 29th Floor (100 Kent Street).

It is being advertised as an event for "modern, sophisticated brides who want to feel glamourous, stylish and unique!" Ummmm, o.k., who doesn't consider themselves to be this person...No actually, I'm an old-fashioned and tacky bride and prefer to feel ugly and blend in with others!!! LOL!

Letterpress envy!

Today's Ottawa Citizen newspaper featured a nice long article on Ottawa-based letterpress company Dempsey Press. The couple (Vanessa Dempsey & Mike Freeman) create unique designs for greeting cards, whacky stationery, business cards and invitations/announcements on a massive "vintage Heidelberg Windmill Red Ball press" using rich, luxe paper product. Although I have not personally seen their work, I do know about these presses and get goosebumps thinking of the gorgeous final products that they create (insert jealous pangs here!!!).

These types of presses are a fortune to buy (that is if you can even get your hands on a classic one) and another fortune to maintain, but they really do allow for some creative and beautiful works. Breakfast at Tiffany's Shower

So, I was super excited to share pics of one of my latest projects, but upon checking them out, I am now super disappointed with...my camera! Lol! I know, I know, if I had a dollar for everytime I complained about my lack of a good camera, I would have one by now!!!

Anyway, it is the design and colours that I love so much about this fun Breakfast at Tiffany's-themed Bridal Shower Invitation. The party planner, Lesley, sent me a picture of a similar invitation that she had found somewhere on-line and requested Tiffany blue square envelopes. I was able to find them in a shimmer finish to match the shimmer of the off-white cardstock that the invitation was printed on. With a deeper shade of Tiffany blue as the second layer, the complete package looks so stunning - I can't wait for the bride-to-be to see them after the shower! It was fun playing with different fonts and graphics (including an imitation Audrey Hepburn pose from the classic film). So, the moral of the story is...don't judge based on the quality of this picture - the final product looks classy and fun!

FYI: if you are planning on creating and sending square cards or invitations by mail, be sure to allow for extra postage in your budget. They cost about double as much as rectangular-sized envelopes (ie: over a dollar each).

Boxes, Bags and Tags, oh my!

Just cleaning up some items after a busy month of orders and thought I'd share a picture of some older favour boxes and bags I have around the office. These sizes are perfect for most edible items (chocolates, candies and mints) but can be used creatively for many other items as well! The colours were always chosen by the hosts to match whatever theme they were going with - that's the beauty of custom-made: each box and bag is die-cut from your selected paper to ensure an exact match to the rest of your stationery...isn't life beautiful?!! LOL!

Wed by Hand Bridal Show tomorrow

This is the second year for the Wed by Hand wedding show in Ottawa, and although it's not as large as the Lansdowne show, it's intimate and features some awesome vendors. There will be over 30 vendors so it provides some variety yet makes it intimate enough to enable brides to get a chance to talk to the vendors, which is not always possible at the larger shows. Last year it was held at the Marriot Courtyard and this year they've decided to use the Glebe Community Center.

It's tomorrow, February 6th from 10am - 5pm and they will be charging an admission this year, but with all the raffles, free samples and swag bags, it should be well worth it. Check it out for yourself, or head to their website www.wedbyhand.com

My friend Sue, of Crazy4Chocolates will be giving away truffle samples as well as a special favour box for the first 100 brides (there's reason enough not to miss it!). No. 92: Ghosts of Girlfriends Past

I remember seeing this movie in the theatre with my best friends on a spa weekend in Kingston - it was an impulse watch as we were leaving a restaurant and even snuck in our take-home cheesecakes to eat while watching!!! It turned out to be a pretty funny movie and offers a lot of inspiration in terms of style and decor.

The reception location of the wedding to take place is supposed to be Matthew McConaughey's deseased uncle's chateau. In actuality, it's called The Great House on Castle Hill and is found on The Crane Estate in Massachusetts. You can hold your wedding and reception there. Check it out here.

The wedding party spend the weekend at this estate as they prepare for the wedding and Matthew's character experiences a "Christmas Carol"-type visitation as he explores his behaviour towards women, the distruction he has caused and the woman he has lost (Jennifer Garner). As a result he sees her future wedding which I thought I'd share as it is so pretty - no other owrd to describe it...very girly and pretty! I like the simplicity of Jennifer's hair and the bouquets at the end of each pew lining the aisle. Everything looks so bright and sunny (the all-white church helps with this for sure!)

The "real" wedding takes place at the end of the film in the estate, and although it doesn't need much decor to make it grand, throughout the building they draped silk and exagerated flowing bouquets (think stair cases, fireplaces, centre pieces, doorways). For the reception, the classic gold chivari chairs were placed at round tables in neautral linens. Decor throughout was always in neutral shades, but very elegant and rich. A gorgeous wedding location doesn't need many add-ons, which is a bonus! The bridesmaids gowns are nice and flowy with very flattering twisted detail at the neckline. The deep red colour is perfect for winter or fall weddings.

One scene that will have you panicking and laughing is the classic cake-topple! What a gorgeous wedding cake - four tiers of neutral fondant, dotted with tiny flowers and draped with fondant ribbons. When Matthew's character knocks one of the pillars down with a flying cork, he attempts to balance it with one hand...emminent disaster! I loved Lacey Chabert's character's reaction - she looses it and actually calls Matthew a "bitch!!!" LOL!

All in all, a fun movie with inspiring ideas and lots of laughs!

Always inspiring...

Yes, it's true...I may have a small obsession with the Princess-to-be, Kate Middleton! She just looks like a regular, nice girl - with style to boot. Her own personal obsession with London clothing designer ISSA is no secret (as she's seen wearing a different dress of theirs daily), but thanks to People.com today, I was able to find similar styles that I thought would make great bridesmaids gowns.

This first gown may be on the riskier side, due to the lower neckline, but in my opinion, remains more elegant than riské - a little cleavage can go a long way!!! The similar dress is from the Dessy Collection line and retails for $210 (USD), although I'm sure with a little surfing online, you can find it for even cheaper. It is also available in over sixty colours and even allows you to mix and match the sash colour (fun!). Find it here.

I just love the fabric of these dresses she adores - they look so comfortable (LOL!) I am a fan of halter style dresses. I think they show off shoulders beautifully like a strapless, but are a great option for those who worry about pulling up at their gown all night. Although the pink gown is not a true halter style, it criss-crosses in the back. I love how it draws the eyes in and really slims the figure. Windows with a view!

So after checking out pictures of the venue for the movie "American Wedding," I was reminded just how beautiful two major attractions here in the Canada's Capital are and thought I would share a few pictures of them as well. If you are looking for grandeur and views (and have a flexible budget), then these venues are for you.

A great thing about both the Museum of Civilization (in Gatineau) and the National Gallery of Canada (in Ottawa) is that they are on the Ottawa River and allow for fantastic pictures and views no matter where you are on the property. You can even find some greenery in nearby parks if you are not a fan of downtown scenery - so the options are endless!

Whether it's sunny, rainy, Winter or Summer, the light in both buildings is incredible thanks to the floor to ceiling glass walls and glass dome ceilings.

There are beautiful art pieces, staircases and hallways found in both as well, which can make for interesting pictures and can entertain guests as they wait for the celebration or reception to begin (a big bonus!)
These venues can definitely cater to any couple - hope they inspire you!

No. 93: American Wedding

Wow - I didn't realize just how old this movie was (meaning how old I am) until looking through pictures from American Wedding, of American Pie series of movies. I remember loving her dress and the ceremony setting with the arches at the time...well, my taste has changed a little since then!

What I do love though is that the indoor venue was so tall and made completely of glass, meaning that there is not much need for decoration. This type of venue gives a sense of grandeur and allows you to feel as though you are a part of nature without being outside. It makes me think of the National Gallery in Ottawa and the Museum of Civilisation in Gatineau (which both do weddings) and both have stunning views from their tall windows. (See next blog post!)

The linens used to decorate the tables in this movie have not gone out of style either as they are in classic ivory and irridescent gold/beige. The thick bows in the same fabric drape around the back of the covered chairs elegantly. Although I am not a rose person, I do still love the tall, huge flutes of flowers used as centrepieces - tall being a must-have in this type of venue. The soft white lights strewn about the room add the to the sparkle of the night sky, which can be seen thanks to the glass dome.

Although some styles do change, there are definitely some inspiring ideas to be taken from this one!

Invitation Gallery 7

As I've always said, it is super helpful when a couple come to me looking for stationery and know what they want. In the case of Kristian and Michael, they had an exact picture that they found online and with just a few adjustments to colour and layout, I was able to come up with exactly what they were looking for. The Toronto couple will be getting married in Florida with a smaller guest list, but wanted to share their joy when they return by holding a reception for all those who could not attend the smaller destination ceremony.

Since Kristian will be taking her future husband's family name, we chose to put the first initial of his family name (the "S") as a dark watermark in pink in the place of an ampersand ("&"). I love the cursive and caps mix as well as the pink on ivory on black. Very chic, simple and elegant!

They are also having programs, candy jar labels, place cards and itineraries made, so I will keep you posted as they are created.

No. 94: The Hangover

As you can see, the caliber of movies I watched over the holidays was quite high! The Hangover was also playing on tv and I just love the wedding location and scenes at the end. I wish I could find more pictures and will continue to search, but for now, we'll have to make due with these.

The wedding takes place at her parents gorgeous, grand estate. The bride wore an Amsale gown with black ribbon detail around the waist. I love the classic picture/scene of her at the window, waiting for her man...it really shows off the dress too! I do like the simple flower in her hair, but found the tight/clean ponytail a little too severe for her strong face. In my opinion, she just looked angry (although her character was a little upset waiting for her groom!!!) Her bridesmaids looked equally elegant in mirror opposite gowns (black with white ribbon at the waist) and the little flower girls looked like sweet mini-brides! I would have loved this as a six-year-old!

You know already how much I love outdoor weddings - this one was no exception. The soft glow of the globe paper lanterns in the trees and around the large dance floor pergola add a romantic flair. Of course, the wedding music (sung by The Dan Band - a comedy group) set the mood with their take on "The Candy Shop" at the end of the film!

If you haven't seen this one, rent it...and have a few drinks while you do!

No.95: Legally Blonde 2

Wow - so just because I haven't posted in a little while, doesn't mean I wasn't thinking of all the lovely inspiration ideas that I've had! I got to have a few down days over the holidays to just lie around a watch some great and awful movies...and with the wedding theme in mind, I am noticing just how many movies have marriages in the storyline. Legally Blonde 2 just happened to be on television, so I thought I'd share the few pictures I could find.

Reese is just so gorgeous to begin with, so I do love how her character "Elle" kept her style simple (long flowing hair, minimal makeup, and simple, yet elegant Reem Acra gown). Of course, the ring was her signature style with a light pink stone flanked by diamonds. If you really love it, a replica can be purchased for less than $10 online at Overstock.com!

As we head into the days surrounding Christmas, I thought I would leave you with some holiday inspired items to peruse. The dark tent whose roof is lit with clear chirstmas lights is a romantic and safe way to mimic the night sky without risking the bad weather! I also like the dark colours used for everything from bridesmaids dresses and flowers to the black and gold mini cakes. Those are especially elegant without being too "Christmasy!!!"

And of course, I couldn't resist the gorgeous red gown...I guess it works if you're marrying someone named "Nick," "Kringle" or "Clause" though right?!!!

Top 100: No. 96 Mamma Mia

Love this musical, have seen it twice on stage...but have yet to see the film! Thought I would share some pictures anyways as this wedding is all about location...Do you really need to worry much about decor when your background is beautiful Skopelos Island in Greece? The white buildings set against the blue sea is just incredible. I found a site that caters specifically to creating "Mamma Mia" style weddings in Greece (which is where the beach picture is taken from). The long, soft and flowing dresses match the laid back yet elegant style of the island. And would there be any other way to make an entrance but on the back of a donkey? I think not! Enjoy!

Top 100: No. 97 The Bride Wars

Ok - what was I thinking coming up with 100?!! Finding pictures will prove to be the most challenging...but I do love a good challenge! Oh, and here's an indoor venue for you!

The movie The Bride Wars, doesn't particularly have a memorable amazing wedding scene (since the girls have an all-out brawl on the day), however; the dresses, location and decor are still stunning and out-of-this-world! The wedding takes place at The Plaza, an upscale hotel in New York City, and coveted by many brides-to-be. The room that the ceremony took place in features gorgeous mirrored doors and walls making everything appear grander and light. Check out the ornate detailing on the ceilings and curtains in the reception hall...it truly looks like a castle inside! Did you notice the centrepieces, or were they a bit too small?!!

Both dresses are stunning and fit their unique brides - both were designed by Vera Wang. What do we think of the grooms bowtie?

Top 100: No. 98 I Love You Man

Is there a theme going on? OK, I'm obviously partial to outdoor weddings, but promise to showcase many indoor events as well. I just remember loving the wedding scene at the end of the movie: "I Love You Man." Actress Rashida Jones and her bridesmaids look so natural and gorgeous. The yellow dresses are Nanette Lepore designs, while I believe the brides simple flowing gown is a J Crew number. I'm not super crazy about the blue suit worn by Paul Rudd, but who was looking at him anyway?

The setting, however, is unmistakably enviable! It was filmed at a private residence in Malibu - ah to not ever worry about rain (or snow) on your wedding day! The bamboo pergola and all the cascading fabrics make for a funky, yet romantic atmosphere. I love the use of the small rectangular tables that line the aisle. The clear vases overflowing with yellow flowers reflect the bridesmaids dresses beautifully.

Nothing more to say except it's perfect, just perfect! (Plus, I've run out of adjectives!)

Top 100: No. 99 Rachel Getting Married

Alright, so this movie was a little intense in terms of the incredible array of emotions and problems scattered throughout. It did, however, have it's beautiful and precious wedding moments as well.

Another lucky couple with parents who own gorgeous, huge property on which to host the event. The tent that they brought in was very true to their unique and quirky style. Check out the details - it makes me think of a renaissance fair or gypsy, palm-reading den! Even the types of music and dance move between styles and themes, yet seem to flow somehow too.

I love how the quirky decor flowed from the house (in which they got married) out to the garden and then towards the tent. Using round paper lanterns of different sizes and colours held this theme together beautifully. The blue elephant cake was a unique touch as well. And of course, if you're getting married in the library of the house, eating blue elephant cake and dancing with belly dancers, you will need little glass trinkets as placecard favours right?! I just love it - and I wonder why this movie's wedding stayed with me for so many years after seeing it?!!!

100 Best: No.100 Father of the Bride

I thought it best to start the list with the classic home wedding from Father of the Bride. In this 1990's film, Steve Martin helps his daughter carry off her dream wedding, no matter what the cost...and cost is quite evident!

When you own a home as classically beautiful as this, it would be difficult to want to hold a hall reception. Look to your close family and friends for this option, but do keep in mind that it is often more expensive to bring the hall to you, as you will need to rent every item individually (cutlery, tables, chairs, linens, a dance floor...) that would normally be included and readily available in a hall. I would suggest working with a professional planner if going this route to ensure nothing has been left out!

Although styles have and will continue to change (think hair and clothing), the tent reception is a classic and the "Chiavari" chairs continue to be a coveted and costly choice for upscale outdoor reception seating. Although the cascading vines and greenery would be a little much these days, the lighting and chandelier are an elegant touch.

The cake too remains quite classic today as a three tier round design. It has a small sampling of real flowers on top and some scattered around the base as well, but flows beautifully with her theme of flowers and vines and outdoor life.

It is amazing what can be done when money is no object for daddy's little girl...oh to dream!

100 Best Movie Weddings

Watching movies is a fabulous pastime...not only do you get a little escape from reality, but often you can take out some fashion ideas, find new music, plan fantasy vacations based on locations seen and so much more. So I thought: Why haven't I been focusing on bringing to you, regularly, the fantastic, and often over-the-top, weddings from movies? As I sit here, home sick with a terrible head-cold, I will attempt to come up with my own list of the 100 Best Movie Weddings, and bring you the still shots of those events. No matter what the size and cost, there is always something to be seen that can inspire a couple working with any budget. Since the year is coming to a close and there are only 24 hours in a day, I will allow myself until March to come up with a completed list - does this seem fair?

Please keep in mind, the order is not of particular importance (except for Number One, which is my absolute favourite!)

Real Weddings: Giulia & Michael

I am thrilled to share some more gorgeous pictures from another amazing Ottawa Wedding. Giulia and Michael we married at Blessed Sacrament and held their reception at Centurion Conference and Event Centre in September. Now Giulia was a bride who had a vision and knew what she wanted from the start (which can be a dream for the stationery designer)...and this vision and determination is quite clear when you look at how the day came together in her pictures...everything looks absolutely perfect!

The vibrant purple, used in everything from dresses, flowers, favours, stationery and pew bows to the brides own shoes, looks stunning in contrast to the elements of white and black alike. I also really like the softness of the white hydrangea bouquets set low as the centrepiece on black linens.

Like couple Karen and Chris, she made use of the Ottawa U campus for her portraits. (Why had I not thought of this location before?) I especially love the one of the Bridal Party on the stairs. What a gorgeous couple, and wedding party! Congratulations Giulia and Michael and many thanks for sharing your day with us! I know these pictures will inspire those in planning mode!

Thank goodness for time-shifting...I occasionally get to catch an episode of Oprah and yesterday's was a lot of fun thanks to guest Carson Kressley. He's so funny - he gave viewers an inside peek at the "Running of the Brides," an annual event that travels around the United States that has brides and their supportive friends camping over night to line up for a huge (and I mean HUGE) sale on designer wedding gowns. Some dresses are worth over $5,000 being sold at this sale for under $500. Amazing! Check out the video and story here.

So after that viewing, Oprah and Carson talked bridesmaids dresses. He said, "The bride is the star, but she needs a good supporting cast!" I loved this - so true. And now I can brag that the dress he chose to have modeled on the show was the exact J Crew dress I blogged about in September (which Ottawa bride Lesley had her bridemais wear in her wedding at the Brookstreet Hotel in Kanata). On Oprah, he paired the grey J Crew dress with a nude Aldo pump and it looked awesome!!! Lesley's bridesmaids can actually wear those little dresses again around the holidays - how thoughtful of the bride!

What has taken me so long to discover this gem? What a fantastic and fun find featured in this month's InStyle Magazine! Although all of their creations look earthy and cute, I favour the custom-made character stamps which you can create to look like you (or members of your family or friends) with your names scripted below and the custom monograms too. Just think of all the uses for these: Thank You cards, personal stationery, labeling books, writing notes, invitations, sealing envelopes, labeling favours...So fun! They have a little wedding selection too (which is heavy on bird designs, but beautiful nonetheless)

Real Weddings: Karen & Chris

Oh my goodness - I am so excited to share with you some exquisite wedding pictures taken here in Ottawa of newlyweds Karen and Chris in October. I highly recommend using parts of the University of Ottawa campus as your picture-taking location. The outdoor tiles, archways and hanging greenery look straight out of a storybook...not to mention how gorgeous this bride and groom and their wedding party look against it too!

The Bride's stunning gown was found at McCaffrey Haute Couture on Sussex while the "to-die-for" shoes are Jimmy Choo! The bridesmaids dazzled in dresses from Badgley Mischka's Bridesmaid Collection (see earlier post) and the groom wore a tux from Morris Formal Wear on Wellington.

For favours, they featured both a candy table for guests to fill their own take-out boxes with as well as sweet wrapped treat. Bride, Karen, adores chocolate while groom, Chris, favours licorice...so they married the two flavours and offered little chocolate dipped licorice sticks as an added favour. From what I hear, guests just loved them (and some took more than their share too!)

Now that is what I love to see - taking an idea (such as candy favours) and making it unique to you as a couple. Congrats to the Yzermans...I'm sorry I missed such an incredible celebration!

In my neck of the woods (in Ottawa), I have found a new Bridal Salon with some exquisite designs. If you're dress shopping, be sure to make an appointment at White Satin Bridal Couture in Bells Corners. The window display draws you in, but check them out on-line to see what their unique designers have to offer. My two favourites of the moment are the ultra-feminine, yet simple gowns above by Olivia Couture and can be found at this salon.

Enjoy this part of the planning...try on as many as you can handle and don't scoff at any on the hanger - they always look different when on you!

Sweet Nursery

I finally got to the home of a family friend in Milton and just had to share these pics of her baby girl Marina's nursery. Proud papa, Helder, did all of the custom moulding work and it looks incredible. And really, what baby girl doesn't need a little chandelier in her room?

Great DIY idea for decorating: she framed the covers of two of her favourite childhood books as well as some scrapbook pages that she loved. It looks like it would be found in House and Home - congrats Georgina and Helder! xoxo

Ok readers - I need to know: who out there has tried spray tanning? I know we have many options as to where to get it done here in Ottawa, but the idea just makes me so nervous...and I can't help thinking of Ross from that Friend's episode in the spray booth (that would be me!) I am thinking of trying it out before heading South at Christmas, but really don't know anyone who's tried it before. It seems very reasonably priced (between $25-40 for full body) but makes me nervous. Has anyone had this done for their wedding? If so, how long did it last and did it melt/leak at all onto clothing? The website are very convincing (as they should be) but I need real feedback...

Another gem from this weekend's paper in the Life section told of a fashion deisgner in Vancouver who was tired of the horror stories she was hearing from Bride-to-bes trying to organized their big day. She created the site Weddingful.com that offers the couple personalized planning services by giving them direct access to vendors in their area. Not a new concept, I had to check it out (and of course sign up as a vendor). But, lo and behold, Ottawa is not an available city yet (just Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto and the US)...but no, not Canada's Capital City! I guess we don't really need help being so small and all....WHAT?!!!

Ok, I've calmed down! I'm sure we're next on the list...I'll let you know when we make it In the meantime, the site is very user friendly and has some great pictures and blog posts that are helpful to all.

I love the weekend paper. There's nothing better than having the time to sit down, eat breakfast and go through each section leisurely...well maybe adding chocolate would be better! That's what I found in the "Real Deal" section of The Ottawa Citizen this morning - a tiny, little article that I would miss on a weekday, letting us readers know that Leeorah Pearce, (graduate of Le Cordon Bleu and creator of Chelsea Truffles) has come out with a new line of artisan Belgian chocolate bars (in both milk and dark chocolate). Even the packaging looks delicious! Of course, I notice the boxes and tags!

At $5, they're a little large and pricey for wedding favours, but these would be great for smaller parties or as Thank Yous, when paired with a bottle of wine, to those who have helped create your perfect event. They also make a great gift for yourself...I'll let you know about that myself!!!

O.K., I swear I do not have shares in Marchesa - but honestly...how amazing is this dress. Can't you just picture wearing it to your rehearsal and dinner? I think I was supposed to be born into royalty...

I have to say, though, it is nice to see a celebrity wearing shoes that you and I can afford. Lauren Conrad sure wears a lot of Aldo footwear!

Program Inspired by Bridesmaids

Thought I would share a few pictures that I have been meaning to for a while...sorry about that! New bride Karen asked me to create her booklet style Wedding Programs while taking inspiration from her bridesmaids dresses. The dresses they wore were the style seen in the first picture (the yellow dresses) but they were made in the lilac colour of the second picture. So gorgeous! Both are from Badgley Mischka's Bridesmaid collection.

Check out the last two pictures to give you an idea of how the booklet programs turned out. (And yes, I have put a new camera on my Christmas list this year!) Using a hopsack textured, lilac paper as the cover to the four shimmer ivory insert pages created an elegant look to match this elegant affair. We also used the same monogram-type label on the front of the programs as we used on her pocket invitations to continue that simple theme.

I'm looking forward to sharing some pictures from her big day with you soon. (The newlyweds are just home from their European honeymoon...so we'll let her unpack first!)

Real Weddings: Lesley & Trevor

Lesley and Trevor planned everything down to the last details when preparing for their wedding which took place in September - and nothing was off theme! Check out the above inspiration boards from her venue at the Brookstreet Hotel in Kanata. She'll be sending me some more pictures shortly (that will be of better quality) so I'll keep you posted!

I really loved the hydrangea clusters as the centrepieces with tall wispy vines flowing up from the centre. The wishing tree was another sweet idea as guests were encouraged to write their wishes or share their secrets for a happy marriage with the newlyweds. Using fancy message boards from Staples, Lesley created a simple and elegant seating chart. And lets not forget her green and white candy table with take-out boxes as favours. All-in-all, a great success!

Congrats to Lesley and Trevor!

P.S. Don't the bridesmaids dresses and shoes rock your world! What a fantastic combination!

Real Weddings: Kellye & Sean

Sean & Kellye are officially husband and wife after a beautiful celebration on Lake Huron in Kincardine. Although they planned for an outdoor rock garden ceremony, the winds, rain and cold were just wild (see picture taken from inside the pavilion), so the entire evening took place in the Beach Pavilion overlooking the water. (And this was no disappointing alternative.)

Everything was perfect...and I mean perfect! Every detail was taken into consideration and their theme colours of bright blue and deep purple were reflected in every aspect of the evening (the orchids, the sand ceremony, the linens, the cake and the stationery of course!) There is nothing better than providing transportation from the hotel to the venue for your guests. You are ensuring that they will stay and have a great time, leaving no one to drive at the end of the evening. Open bars always help this situation as well (thanks S & K!)

It is not too often that you see black linens being used at weddings, but it just went so well with their colours. I loved the blue satin material draped as ribbons behind each guests dinner chair. I also really liked how they tied the same blue satin material on the ceremony chairs along the aisle with a few sprigs of dendrobium orchids hanging down. Just stunning!

But, just when I thought that there is nothing my little iPhone can't do, I realize that the camera is not all that fantastic at all; however, if we didn't have it and all it's GPS wonder, we might not have even made it from Ottawa!!! Pretty Shoes by Lela Rose

How cute are these little gems? Bride-to-be Leslie brought them by for me to check out this morning, so of course I had a little photo shoot with them! These are the shoes that her bridesmaids will be wearing with their knee length grey J Crew, strapless dresses...they are going to look so hot! (I believe it is the "Taryn" dress above, but will double check). What an incredible colour combination too. She has really kept with her theme since the invitations.

Anyway, the shoes are designed by Lela Rose and are actually made exclusively for Payless...yes seriously. The catch is that they are only available to residents of the United States, so call your long lost relatives and see how they feel about becoming your new shipping address! It's my favourite time of year...Autumn! With the cool evenings, changing colours and giving thanks, what could be better? This is also a great time of year to get married - play up the deep, bright colours around you, make it a masquerade ball or become one with nature.

I found the above inspiration boards on a number of sites (I've checked out so many I forgotten which is which!) I love the idea of homemade pies (think apple, pumpkin and sugar) as well as using pinecones or apples as place card holders.

New baby boy

Here are the final baby announcement cards going out for baby Kyson. New mom Sarah just couldn't choose between papers and asked instead that I make an assortment for her. All of the announcement cards have the textured deep brown linen as a first layer, and the shimmery ivory paper as the final layer with print, but the second layer is unique to all. It was so much fun doing them this way - thanks Sarah!

The lightweight magnets I adhered to the back of each will make it easy for family and friends to put Kyson right up on their fridge for everyone to see. What a cute little monkey...

Event Stationery Gallery 1 1/2!

I have already posted the samples I made for Kellye and Sean's wedding, but wanted to post the final versions of the wedding stationery that were shipped off to Toronto this morning. I just love the crisp vibrant blue and black printing together on the Table Number & Menu cards. They are having two of these tent-folded cards at each of their reception tables. The seating chart is a 18" x 24" poster and will fit into a black frame with glass that they purchased at Michaels (I can't wait to see this put together). They asked for special place cards for both sets of parents only, to ensure that they had the best seats at their respective tables (so thoughtful!)

How elegant does it look when all of your stationery matches? I believe that they will be having blue and purple orchids as flowers, so I can just imagine how it will all come together...looking forward to seeing this! It is not always easy to work with a couple long-distance, but I am thrilled with how everything turned out. Best wishes to the happy couple as they count down to their Big Day in just a few weeks!

Cakes to die for!

If you're stuck for an idea for a one-of-a-kind cake, there is no shortage of inspiration at Magpie's Cake. OMG - these are some of the most gorgeous and lust-worthy creations I've seen in a while. Look at the ruffled layers, it looks just like a gown. I guess it should come as no surprise then that the designer has a background in ballet...but how does she do it?!!

Unfortunately, the bakery is in Washington, D.C., but the photos in her gallery can be used as inspiration when consulting with your designer. You know I love to support the home based business, so I always recommend Fab Cakes by Jessica, who is here in Ottawa and I have worked with twice. She's very creative, accommodating and has no problem with you bringing in pictures of what you like and don't like. (And her cupcakes are heavenly!) She offers delivery service to your venue in the Ottawa area as well (or beyond for an added charge). I bet she'd know just how to create those luscious, frilly layers above!

Wall Art Inspiration

I can remember, not too long ago now, that the only wall art/stickers you could get for your home were of Disney characters for your toddler's room or under the sea creatures for your bathroom. It is incredible the selection out there today and that you can find wall art and stickers everywhere (even at the Dollar Store).

I thought I'd give it a try since I out-grew my old home office and have moved into another room (Thank you Rob). It's fun because I get to decorate and design all over again (Thanks again Rob!) I purchased my two vinyl sticker images (see picture above of the quote and long stems) through Stampin Up Canada. They were surprisingly easy to stick up, but they can't be moved - once they're up, they're up! So you best be picking your wall space wisely!

If you're looking for a more permanent look, murals continue to be a popular choice (especially in baby and children's rooms). I wanted to share a picture of my cousin's nursery for his newborn daughter, Ellie. My godmother actually did the mural painting herself (she is incredibly creative and talented woman). I just think the Japanese blossoms are so different and that it looks stunning on the wall...I also love the mini chandelier above the crib (can you see it?)

I must have babies on the brain today, so I thought I better post a baby boy's nursery too! I love, love, love the dropped mouldings to featured a design border around the room. They too used Stampin Up vinyl art called "Spot On II" (there's a "Spot On I" for girls with pink, green and brown circles too).

I'm feeling so inspired! Is it ok to just go ahead and decorate a nursery if you're not expecting? hmmmmmm...

Baby Announcement Gallery 1

Hooray - I am so excited to be creating a baby announcement. I know I need to be patient and remember that first comes love, then comes marriage, and then...well you know the rest! But there is something so special (and a little less stressful) about putting this kind of custom stationery together. I remember being a bride myself and worrying about the budget and obsessing over minute details and timelines...it can be a stressful time, if you let it. But new parents are in a whole new mind set altogether, aren't they? (I think it's been called "survival!") Anyway, I just love the natural pose in the picture of little baby Kyson - what a cutie! Who wouldn't want to show him off to family and friends.

I put together the above samples with paper I had in stock, and am not sure how I feel about the thick brown ribbon...I definitely favour the simplicity of the brown textured cardstock announcement, but I may add another layer to it (and I'll post any changes). I'll also be adding a small magnet to the back so that the recipients can admire him on their fridge.

Oooooooo...I could just smoosh his little cheeks!!!

The minimalist bride

This is such a great time of year for inspiration as many celebs tie the knot. It is remarkable how simple Alicia Keys wedding decor was when she married Swizz Beatz in Corsica. Bright red table linens, gold chairs and place settings and tall glass candelabras. To be fair, it was an outdoor reception around an infinity pool beside the Mediterranean Sea! What more could you want or need?

Alicia also wore a diamond head piece that was originally a choker necklace. She looked like Princess Jasmine (so beautiful, but definitely not a look that anyone can pull off!)

I attended a wedding a few years ago that used very similar decor (see pics above). The tall candelabras are a great choice as guests aren't forced to look over or around a large centrepiece to speak to each other. They are certainly a cheaper alternative to floral pieces and many reception venues offer these type of centrepieces in their packages, so don't be too quick to discount them!

What about the Music?

I've got some extra spring in my step today, despite the rain, thanks to last night's Michael Buble concert. He is just so darn cute and seems to wear his emotions on his sleeve...I could just nibble those ears of his...oops...Too much information?!!! Besides the looks, he truly is an incredible talent that can have you jumping up on your feet one minute, and near tears the next. I was reminded why my husband and I chose to play his music exclusively throughout the cocktails and dinner portion of our own wedding reception. He is one of those musicians who is appreciated and loved by all ages.

Music is a very important element of your event, and must be considered well ahead of time. This is also one of those tasks that the gentlemen especially like to get involved in - so bring it up soon!

I just came home from a fantastic week in Toronto and Hamilton with two of my closest girlfriends and am feeling reflective (and a little sad to be back to reality)! Maybe more so since I had to rush home for a funeral...but I am remembering the summer of my wedding and how every time I got together with my girls, I put them to work! It's so important, you bride-to-bes out there, to spend quality time with your girls and separate it from YOUR event. Make a date all about the two of you (or three or four of you) watching cheesy movies, mixing fun drinks or practicing your best American Idol karaoke. Just be sure that your ladies know how much you appreciate them, and not just because they tie great bows and have perfect handwriting!!!

Lots of White for Chelsea

So some pictures have been released of the much-anticipated Chelsea Clinton wedding and it would appear as though she is a big fan of WHITE! Check out the simplicity of her ceremony, yet how elegant it all looks together: white chairs (no aisle decorations) white runner (no trim or details) and of course her all-white bouquet.

In Ribbon Heaven!

Nerd alert! I think I died and went to ribbon heaven when I walked into this gorgeous store in Manhattan called M&J Trimming. Wall upon wall and floor-to-ceiling ribbon, lace, jewelry and feathers in all shapes, sizes, colours and textures. They even have an in-store Bridal Salon with custom made head pieces and more. Check out their window displays and their trend board that I snapped for you. I love to see that favour boxes are still the rage! And, how cute are the cakes? They would look so pretty as a centre piece for a shower.

NYC Flower Trends

It's all about the greenery - think drama using stems and leaves - in NYC right now. Oh, to have a flower budget, like I do for groceries and gas! I snapped the pictures of the tall glass vases at the W Hotel in Times Square. They would look incredible at the entrance of your special event or as bookends to your head table. They could even be created on a smaller scale as tall table centrepieces. I love the different shades of purple ranunculus. It's such pretty flower to begin with, that a huge bunch spilling out of the vase is just outrageous!!! Love, love, love!

The orchid designs were in another hotel lounge and are such a statement piece. These would look fantastic on tables, but be sure that it suits your choice of venue. (I prefer tall centrepieces in larger reception halls). This style could, however, be used anywhere from desert tables to buffet tables.

Calla lilies still rule, however, and were seen in every other hotel lobby and restaurant. The most popular colour for calla lilies right now in NYC: Purple!

Real Brides of NYC

Wandering the streets and parks of New York City on a Saturday is bound to have you bumping into some trendy brides! I caught one blushing bride looking so elegant and traditional leaving her hotel and stepping into a gorgeous, vintage white car. She wore a strapless princess gown (lots of beading, lots of poof in the skirt!) and a simple veil tucked beneath her updo. Even her flowers were elegant and traditional as she carried an all-white bouquet of roses and stephanotis dotted with pearls in the centre.

The second bride was caught in a downpour during her photo shoot in Central Park. Fortunately, she opted for a less popular tea-length, halter-style white dress and didn't have to worry about a filthy train! Unfortunately, my eyes were drawn more towards her bridesmaid than herself. I adore her bridesmaid's pale pink dress that drapes her body just perfectly and looks so sweet with the thin white belt. She was carrying a small bouquet of pale pink roses with a few deep purple roses in the centre. Although they were walking away from us, I didn't want to creep her out like a paparazzi taking pictures, so I just stared and took mental notes instead for you!!!

What I really want to know, however, is why the second bride is holding her own umbrella and walking alone when there are perfectly good gentlemen and a bridesmaid there to assist...isn't this her day to be the princess?

The bachelorettes are out!

Bachelorette season is in full swing in the city - you can find the blushing "bride-to-be"s sporting their tiaras and veils and naughty paraphernalia! Last night I attended just such an event and we really had the time of our lives (even for a Wednesday night!) We started out as a large group of about 18 women with delicious cuisine in a private room at Social Restaurant on Sussex. Always thinking of events, I thought that this room would be a fantastic place to host a rehearsal dinner or small bridal or baby shower. The room has beautiful stone walls and a large picture window facing the courtyard.

After dinner and a few drinks, we made our way to the Heart and Crown for a few more and finally to Patty Bolands for some dancing. (Note to the party planners: Wednesday nights are happening at Patty Bolands - just don't take your shoes off on the dance floor...it's apparently not encouraged!!!)

I also wanted to share with you a fantastic bachelorette party website for all the party supplies and naughty items you need to pull off such a good time. Pedicures (and more) that come to you!

I am a firm believer in letting professionals handle your feet. Sure anyone can paint a toenail, but not everyone can make their own feet look and feel the way they do after a professional job...so I do indulge in monthly pedicures and encourage you to do the same, especially leading up to your big event. Whether it's a shower, bachelorette or birthday party or your wedding day, you will want to have soft soles and pretty toes peeking out of your shoes!

Today, instead of heading to the spa, I was given the number of an experienced nail technician and esthetician who had recently gone into business on her own and travels to your home/location. Fortunately, she was able to squeeze me in at the last minute and set herself up right in my living room (so that I could sit in my comfy chair!) She was fantastic - a definite type "A" like me, she worked thoroughly to leave my legs and feet feeling like silk and my bright pink toes ready for my trip to NYC this weekend! She was fun to talk to and even convinced me to go from my regular safe route of OPI's "It's all Greek to me" pinky/red shade to a neon "Flower-to-flower" type colour. (P.S. Neon really brings out whatever little tan you might have on your feet!)

I was thinking of all your moms and brides-to-be out there while being pampered in my chair - why make the trip to the nail salon when you can have the relaxing experience in the comfort of your home?

Yes, of course I was first in line to pick up today's copy of People Magazine in order to obsess over the pictures of Mike and Carrie Fisher's Wedding, and I wasn't disappointed. Judging by the pictures, it is obvious that Carrie held onto her vision of her perfect wedding as she had imagined it as a little girl - it looked very magical, very fairy-tale-like, but equally elegant.

In true celebrity style, she changed from her Monique Lhuillier gown into the same designer's strapless cocktail dress. I love how, in the second picture, you can see that one of her guests has already removed her heels, stashed them below her chair and is probably polishing the dance floor in bare feet! Amazing!!!

So what ideas can we take from this affair?

*Using round balls of flowers (she used roses) hung on simple garden flower planter stands to distinguish the aisles for the ceremony

* Having your "alter" in the centre and your guests sitting around in a circle to witness your vows

* using natural elements (tree trunks for the ceremony & branches at the reception tables) to add whimsy

* not overdoing a theme...I was a little nervous that we might see cowgirl hats or hockey sticks everywhere, however, they used bronze painted hockey pucks as table assignment cards in a very creative way. It was a very pink/feminine wedding, so I guess Mike had to have this one element for him!!!

Postage Stamps

So I let you know in a March post about the importance of choosing beautiful stamps to highlight your gorgeous stationery right?! Well in addition to the Canadian Orchid series that you can purchase through Canada Post (in rolls of 100 even), they now also have an African Violet series (sold in booklets of 10). They are equally elegant and can also be purchased online.

Also, if you are not sure about the weight or size of your envelopes, always side with caution and bring one in to your local post office to be weighed or measured. You may need an extra stamp and would not want to send them out only to have them all returned!

Bridal Beauty Tips

Browsing People Magazine's online photos section is a little secret breakfast routine of mine, however, today they posted in their Style section some Bridal Beauty Tips I thought you might like. Everything from hair to skin to lips is there with pictures of celebrities wearing inspiring hairdos, perfect for any special event. Photography: Things to consider

Capturing your special event through pictures is a big deal, and not something to be taken lightly - there is so much to consider when planning this aspect of the day. Depending on how much time you have given yourself, the photographer you want may not be available, but I encourage you to be open to trying different studios, even if your friends haven't recommended them or they are "new in town." It is important, for sure to have a look at their portfolios and to meet with the actual photographers to get a sense of their personalities and style of photography. You will be spending a great deal of time with these people in intimate settings, therefore, you need to be comfortable with them.

Once you have made your decision and chosen your photographer, they will likely ask you to give them a list of "must-have" pictures to be taken: including people's names and settings. On the big day, they will be able to call out the names of people that they need, without you having to worry about finding them and forgetting anyone...you have so much going on, it's great to reflect on what pictures you will want to cherish before the big day arrives.

One of my only regrets from my own wedding is not getting a group shot with all of our guests (especially since many forgot to also sign our guest book!) I found the super-cute above picture online and thought it was such a unique way to capture the group. A nice deviation from the usual shot of church steps. Check if your venue has a balcony or set of stairs that your photographer can climb in order to get this type of shot. The group could be arranged in any shape or monogram...I love it! Put this one on your "must-have" list for sure!

Sweet Favour Idea

So making homemade gifts is not a new idea, but it's a good one. As my husband, family and friends can attest, I am no genius in the kitchen (I once made a batch of pancakes for friends using 1/4 cup of salt instead of 1/4 teaspoon...oops!) however, I love to experiment anyways! The mother of a current client shared her very simple and delicious strawberry jam recipe with me and it is so simple, even I was able to make it successfully. See below for the three steps.

As I was pouring my jam into jars, I thought how they would make such beautiful favours for a special event (shower or wedding alike). What could be more sincere than taking the time to make your guests a treat from scratch, and something that they could enjoy at home while reminiscing about the fantastic time they had at your party!

Of course, you must contact me for your special tags to really complete the look!

Here is the recipe:

1. Crush strawberries to make 3 cups (You can use your fingers in order to get big chunks of berries)
2. Place them in a large bowl and mix in one tbsp fresh lemon juice.
3. Stir in 1 box light pectin crystals (I used certo)

Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes; stir every 10 minutes. Then spoon into freezer jam containers. Make sure to leave enough breathing room between the lid and the jam, about 1/2 inch. Freeze until just before your event or enjoy some yourself right away!

Another Carrie Fisher!

Can you tell it's summer - it's been very hard to sit myself in front of the computer and post! However, I have been busy working and will publish some photos this week.

I am really looking forward to next week's issue of People which will publish exclusive pictures of Mike Fisher's wedding to Carrie Underwood. Apparently, they signed their statement to the magazine "Mike and Carrie Fisher." So traditional...and now she shares her name with Princess Leia!

So, I did get around to watching "I do, but I don't" and what can I say, really. It was predictable, cheesy fun. The story line was somewhat similar to "The Wedding Planner," however it was still fun to watch with a bag of ketchup chips on a rainy afternoon!

When in Rome...

O.K....I self-admittedly have a terrible addiction to cheesy movies, and I'm not talking "chick flicks," but truly cheesy movies! (As in, I'm looking forward to watching "I do, but I don't" with a girlfriend this weekend starring Denise Richards and Dean Cain!!!) Don't worry I will keep you posted on how amazing it turns out to be!!!

However, I did finally see the rom-com "When in Rome" last night and fell in love with everything Kristen Bell wore, so I thought I would share some pics of my two favourite dresses and where you can find them.

The first is her gorgeous blue bridesmaid's gown from Amsale. Although you need to be extremely body confident to pull that one off, I have checked out all of Amsale's Bridesmaid Collection and there are so many beautiful and elegant styles that could suit all body types (they even feature a pregnant bridesmaid on their runway). I better not share that information with my girlfriend, who was 7 months pregnant in my wedding and forced to squeeze into a little green tea-length number! Thanks Bec...xox!

The wedding gown is another Amsale delight. A very classic strapless look with a signature satin ribbon and flower detail. It looks so light and airy and would be perfect for an outdoor garden or beach event.

Continuing on with the Fall and Butterfly theme, I have been working on some favour samples for a bride and groom-to-be. The dusty orange and chocolate brown has really grown on me! The couple will be giving each guest a package with two chocolate truffles (from Sue Casey of www.crazy4chocolate.ca) as a Thank You favour for attending their celebration. The couple ended up choosing the box over the bag, so I will be busy die-cutting, assembling, stamping and wrapping in order to have them ready to fill with truffles in the Fall.

My latest client came to me with absolutely no idea of what she wanted! She liked simple, clean and elegant styles as we looked through pictures together and was able to see what she didn't like (which is super helpful as well!). I created these three samples for her...all quite different, but equally elegant. She ended up loving the font from the embossed single layer, but the elegance of the pocket fold invitation - so we are mixing the two for her final version. I'll be sure to post it when they are completed.
